Singapore Portrait Series Specimen 10,000 Dollars (10K)

This banknote has one of the largest denomination (real value) in the world with a face value of 10,000 Singapore dollars which is almost USD 8000. As Singapore has a Currency Interchangeability Agreement with Brunei, the Brunei 10,000 dollars note ties for the largest denomination (real value).

The note featured in this post has a mintage of 5000 pieces and is printed on real currency paper and has all the exact anti-counterfeit features on the actual note. This note belongs to the 4th set of currency notes issued by the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS).

I have also featured the 2nd series Bird 10000 notes earlier in this post. In total, to date, Singapore has printed 4 designs of the 10000 notes, namely the Orchid, Bird, Ship & Portrait series.

Singapore Ship Series Commemorative $2 - Prudence At The Helm 1967-1992

This note is issued in 1992 along with a book titled "Prudence at the Helm" for commemorating 25 Years Of Currency Issue 1967 – 1992 BCCS. There is also a spelling error as there is a missing “i” in the word “Commissoners” printed on the note. There are only 5000 copies of this book being printed, corresponding to the serial number of the note.

This book is a very good read for all currency collectors and people interested in Economics. My favourite read is the short write-up by Dr. Goh Keng Swee, the deputy chairman of MAS back in 1992, where he explained the need for a currency board and the stand of the government with respect to Economic policies. He wrote briefly about how Singapore should not depend on credit creation and the cabinet did not believe in Keynesian economic policies as our economy is small and open. A preview of the book from NLB can be found here.

Singapore Millennium Series 2 Dollars

Many Singaporeans may not know that besides having the paper & plastic versions of the portrait 2 dollars, there is actually another variety, which is the millennium issue. In year 2000, the portrait 2 dollars was issued with 2 red Singapore millennium logo and a single number as the prefix. Sets of these commemorative notes were packaged and released to consumers, while others were put into circulation for a year.

In this post, I will feature a set of the portrait millennium 2 dollars notes with the same serial. The logo with the numbers 0,1,2 are actually the prefixes (current notes have 6 digit serial numbers). I do have a few sets of these notes for sale, 1 set with 3 notes of the same serial is going for 15 dollars. Please email me at sgbanknotes@gmail.com if you are interested!

Singapore Millennium 2 Dollar Presidential Note

Singapore had released a paper portrait note in 2000, commemorating the millennium. This specific series of Yusof Ishak notes have the millennium logo at the top right and bottom left hand corner of the note, before the serial number. This is the only note in Singapore that has 7 serial numbers, in which actually the first number is also part of the prefix, e.g. millennium 1, when 1 is being used as the first number of the serial no.

United Overseas Bank had packaged these notes in 3s, with the same serial numbers.

Brunei - Singapore 40th Anniversary Commemorative Issues

Most Singaporeans would know about this 20 dollar note. It was issued for the 40th Anniversary for Singapore Brunei Currency Interchangeability Agreement. There were 2 20 dollar notes issued, one from Singapore and the other from Brunei. There were also 2 versions being issued, one in the form of a same number pair in a commemorative folder, the others were issued as circulatory notes.

There were only 12,000 folders issued for both Singapore and Brunei, and therefore the price of this set of notes has went up a few times its issue price.

Interesting Singapore Commemorative Banknotes

Singapore has issued several commemorative banknotes throughout the years, and most Singaporeans may not have seen them before, thus i shall share them with you in this post. If you are interested in owning a piece of the banknote, I would recommend you to buy them now as the prices are rising fast due to the limited prints and the increasing demand for these notes from overseas collectors. I have attached scans of 2 commemorative notes in this post.

The 1st note is the polymer $50 note to celebrate the nations 25th year of independence. The front illustrates the country's development. The oval in the centre shows the first President of Singapore, Encik Yusof bin Ishak. The back of the note highlights the multi-racial character of Singapore. Note the red date 9 August 1990, only 300,000 notes are produced with the red date.

This note was also circulated for a period of time during 1990, where 4.8 million notes were put into circulation. The supply dwindled, and disappeared from circulation within a short period of time.

The 2nd note is the second commemorative note, as well as the 2nd 25 dollar note ever produced by Singapore. This note commemoratives the 25th Anniversary of MAS, and it is not circulated.
